Hazyview and Kruger Park
Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:04
Written by Neil Gray

21 June 2007. Got back last Friday from a weekend in Hazyview followed by four nights at Mopani Camp in the Kruger Park, with a trip list of 189, not too shabby for mid-winter.

The Hazyview weekend turned up a few unexpected "goodies", with Grey Cuckooshrike, Mountain Wagtail, Black Saw-wing, Red-backed Mannikin, Lesser Honeyguide and an amazing number of Ashy Flycatcher prominent among these. I saw more Saw-wings here over the Sabie River at one time than I have seen in all previous sightings of this one put together. Just two walks of only 500m along the riverside track at the resort chalked up 41 species! The pair of Mountain Wagtail was seen at the resort on rocks in the middle of the Sabie River just 2 hours after I had seen another pair on rocks in the Blyde River on the Vaalhoek road out of Pilgrim's Rest! A combination of Hazyview and God's Window turned up seven different sunbird species within 2 hours - Collared, Amethyst, Marico, Greater Double-collared, Southern Double-collared, White-bellied and Malachite.

Wilson's Phalarope at Barberspan
Sunday, 06 May 2007 12:11
Written by Neil Gray

6 May 2007. I went with a fellow birder to Barberspan Nature Reserve in North-West province yesterday to hunt for the vagrant Wilson's Phalarope that had been photographed there a few days ago. We managed to locate a possible candidate, which flew off before we'd really got a good look at a it. However, size was right, in flight the bird was silent, and we could clearly see a white rump and grey tail. Great so far! We were not able to get a good fix on where the bird landed and I ran off in the general direction and took hand-held, full zoom and manual focus shots of a small wader in grass at the water's-edge.

1st May 2007  Paid a very quick visit to the exploration site in the Hotazel area, arriving 4pm yesterday and leaving 10am this morning. Managed to time my drive past the the main waterhole this morning very well. At 09:45 in came +/-40 Burchell's Sandgrouse for their morning drink - joining a solitary pair of Namaqua Sandgrouse that were already there.

25th April 2007   Just back from a week working in the Lubumbashi area of the DRC. I went with high hopes of adding a few birds to my Africa list, as this area boasts some 450 species, 10% of which are not found south of the Zambezi.

12 March 2007. I returned last Friday from a few days at Ngwenya Lodge with my eldest son who is visiting from the UK. We travelled down via Badplaas, the now defunct Msauli asbestos mine, Josefsdal border post (to Swaziland) and the Saddleback Pass to Barberton and on to Ngwenya. We made three day trips into the Kruger Park and returned via Graskop, God's Window, the Three Rondawels, Lydenburg and Dullstroom.
